The Rainbow Connection

“Why are there so many

Songs about rainbows?

And what’s on the other side?”

“Someday we’ll find it

The rainbow connection,

The lovers,

The dreamers,

and me.”

I have no idea what that means, but it sounds nice. The connection, I think, we should really find is that connection with He-Who-Makes-the-Rainbows, a.k.a., God.

And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come: ¹³ I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth. ¹⁴ Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds, ¹⁵ I will remember my covenant between me and you and all living creatures of every kind. Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life. ¹⁶ Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth.”

Genesis 9: 12-16

“Rainbows are visions,

But only illusions,

And rainbows have nothing to hide.”

Isn’t it amazing how the sign God gave as his covenant with Noah (and since we are all descended from Noah, us too) is nothing but an illusion? A beautiful illusion, but an illusion nonetheless. You can’t touch a rainbow, and if you get too close to it, it disappears. Likewise, some people think that God is just an illusion,  and turn away from him. This is God’s nature – to never force us to have faith in him, but to call to us in a gentle, loving voice. For God so loves us, he gives us a choice: to accept him, or to not accept him, to trust in him, or not to trust in him. God forces no one to do anything.

(And yes, this is my Kermit the Frog theology.)

Sometimes God allows us to face obstacles in order to test us and grow us. He gave Noah quite a big obstacle to overcome: a world-wide flood. But in all obstacles, God also tells us how we can overcome it. God told Noah to build an ark, and he even gave Noah specific plans for how to do it. But it wasn’t easy. This ark wasn’t tiny, like how it’s portrayed in many cartoons. It was huge, the size of about 20 college basketball courts, and three-stories high. And remember, Noah lived in a desert, far from any water. People probably thought he was crazy for building such a huge ship by himself in the middle of a desert.

So how can we believe in something that, like the rainbow, appears to be just an illusion? Something intangible, something we can’t touch or hold? Because this is God. We can’t see him or touch him, but we can certainly know him. Some things require faith that God will do for us what he says he will. Put your faith in God, and God will reveal himself to you in ways you could not have foreseen.

Have you been half asleep? And have you heard voices? I’ve heard God calling my name. I’ve heard it too many times to ignore it. There’s something that I’m supposed to be. How about you? Have you heard God calling your name? Let God help you overcome the storms of this life, and let him give you a covenant, a promise,to prosper you, and help you. “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” (Jeremiah 29:11) When we accept Christ as Lord and Savior, we become children of God, and God loves to bless his children with abundance.

Someday we’ll find it, that connection, that oneness with God when we depart this world, and join our Heavenly Father. The lovers, the dreamers, and me.
